If you haven’t already heard of the Amnesia Rockfest, you’re missing out. I had the chance to interview the founder of the festival, Alex Martel, to help preview what must be the most anticipated rock lineup of the year in Canada.
What started at the ripe age of 17, the festival sprouted “in the middle of a small town in the middle of nowhere with only 900 residents and nothing to do.” In it’s first year, 3 bands attracted just over 500 people.
Alex has focused on bringing the ultimate lineup every year based on availability and ensuring a diverse yet balanced style. With 2 new stages this year, festival organizers have been able to really increase the magnitude of the festival and bring it both more big names of the present and acts that have not been in the area for a very long time like Screeching Weasel and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
The 2013 Amnesia Rockfest lineup is unmatched by any rock festival in the country or even nearby. It’s tough to separate the headliners from the supporting acts when the list includes Rise Against, The Offspring, Alice Cooper, Marilyn Manson, Deftones, Rancid, Social Distortion, Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, The Transplants and many many more.
Alex Martel is not only looking forward to those first time back bands, but also to some of the bands he really enjoyed as a kid like The Offspring as a young skateboarder, Marilyn Manson and the Deftones as some of his all time favorite bands.
The 2 day festival taking place on June 14 and 15 offers on-site camping (one of the few in Canada) that is known to get a bit wild, in the most positive of ways. For all you Montrealers thinking of heading out, there are bus services available that can be found on the Rockfest website.
A couple tips for what to bring with you from the founder himself:
- Printed Schedule
- Condoms for the camping grounds (like we said they get wild)
- Money for beer and merch
and most importantly, you’re in for the time of your life.
